There was lots to cheer for during the 2018 golf season for the Wolves of St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy.
After all, the team won the Happy Valley Invitational and was the repeat winner of the District 6 AA tournament, as well as the sub-regional winner.
The team placed fifth in the PIAA event at the conclusion of the season.
However, gone from that team is some talent, thirdyear head coach Chad Walsh said, that will be hard to replace. This year’s version of the Wolves is without Jack Mangene, a D-6 individual champion and St. Joe’s first PIAA medalist; Matt Steyers, who was a regional qualifier; and Ryan Peachey, R.J. Marsh and Jason Thomas.
“We’re young,” said Walsh, noting there are no seniors on the team. “Only three or four players have competed in high school matches.”
Just one letter winner returns in junior Brendan Scanlon.
“We have tons of potential. Many of our players have worked extremely hard this off season and have shown vast improvement from last year in the few days of practice and competition thus far,” said Walsh. “They look poised and eager to fight for a position in the line-up and will continue to improve as they gain experience in competition.”
Walsh said the coaches and players expect to work every day with a purpose and focus on consistent improvement.
“We want to see growth as the year goes on and we want to compete,” he said. “Ultimately though, the goal is to use lessons learned on the course this year to propel ourselves into the next phase of our golf, academic and personal life.”
