Five Malaysian research universities have continued their upward momentum in the top 50 of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)’s list of the best universities in Asia.
Among them, Universiti Malaya (UM) fared the best, climbing five places to be tied with the University of Tokyo at 13th this year.
UM was also ranked top in the nation under six indicators including academic reputation, employer reputation, student to faculty ratio, citations per paper, international research network and inbound exchange students.
The rankings of the four other research universities are Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) at 33rd, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) at 37th, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) at 39th, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) at 46th.
Globally, UM placed 70th, an improvement of 17 notches.
The other four universities ranged between 159th to 217th place in the global ranking, with UPM and UTM having the second-highest and lowest placement respectively.
Across Asia, National University of Singapore (NUS) topped the rankings followed by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the University of Hong Kong.
The QS Asia list compares over 550 universities in the region and ranks them based on 11 indicators, with each indicator carrying a different weightage when the final score is calculated.
Of the 11 indicators, the ones with the highest weightage are: academic reputation; employer reputation; faculty-to-student ratio; international research network; citations per paper; papers per faculty; and number of faculty staff with PhD.
