Reach out to the homeless - Malaysian Christian News

The Catholic Undergraduate Society of University Sains Malaysia (CUSUSM) organised a trip to The Lighthouse Drop-In Centre as a part of the society’s Charity Programme November 15 .

The Catholic Undergraduate Society of University Sains Malaysia (CUSUSM) organised a trip to The Lighthouse Drop-In Centre as a part of the society’s Charity Programme November 15.

Thirty-five  students took part in the programme. They were joined by five more students from IPG and a student from KDU. The participants were greeted with open arms by the members of The Lighthouse Team and received a visit from Fr Stanley Antoni.

The event began with an opening prayer by a representative of CUSUSM. Then, the students were  given an opportunity to converse and spend some time with the homeless to understand their situation better.

The students then proceeded to serve food and drinks to the homeless.

Belevendiran Joseph, the Senior Manager of Lighthouse, stated that he was delighted that CUSUSM have taken a step to serve the ones in need.

Jacob, a visitor from Holland, emphasised that more Malaysians should do this type of charity work.

Not long after that, more of the homeless started coming as it was almost dinnertime. Everyone gathered around for the prayer  before the meal.

During dinnertime, all the participants sat and talked to or just listened to the homeless sharing their stories. They were fascinated by all the stories.

After dinner, all the homeless went back to their respective places and the students helped to clean up the centre.

Afterwards, the students gathered around for a short sharing session. Through this activity, the students learned to be more grateful for what they have in life and to listen to others more. They emphasised the fact that even when we could not provide good advice to others, we should always have our  ears ready to listen to others attentively. Because sometimes, what others need is for someone to hear them out. All in all, the participants were all touched and they intend to do this more often.

The Charity Programme ended  with a photography session and a closing prayer led by the Exco of CUSUSM.
