PETRA JAYA: A lab assistant of Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuching Utara was badly burnt from the waist down resulted from a sulphuric acid spill.
Leny Wirarany Sadikan was doing some work inside the school laboratory store room when the incident happened at 7.30am today.
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department assistant operation director Tiong Ling Hii said an emergency call was received at 7.31am and firefighters from the Petra Jaya as well as the Tabuan Jaya Fire Stations were rushed to the scene. The department also deployed a Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) vehicle.
“Upon reaching the scene, the operation commander reported on the sulphuric acid spillage that had a concentration of 98 per cent and was still flowing inside the school’s lab store room.
“The 40-year-old lab assistant was badly scalded from her back to the waist down and she was rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital,” he said.
Tiong added that the Hazmat team put on their PPE Chemical Protective Suit (CPS) and started tracing the spill using pH papers with reading recorded at potential hydrogen (pH) scale of 1, most acidic.
“The Hazmat team had carried out tactical work to neutralise the acid until the pH reading reached 7. The operation ended at 9.56am,” he said.
